I love this piece!! As a matter of fact, I've thought long and hard before deciding to let it go! The research I've done places it in the 1930's to 1940's and most classify it as rare. I like this one best of all the Bakelite horse styles...this guy is Mr. Personality!
It's described as butterscotch over-dyed red and measures 2-3/4" x 2-1/2-2-5/8" depending on which area you measure. The harness is antiqued patterned goldtone metal; the colored reins are also intact. The piece has a very nice weight to it...you notice that immediately. It has been Bakelite tested.
The Googly eye moves easily; the carving is clean and sharp. There are no scratches or chips...overall this fellow is in great condition for his age. The only thing that I could quibble about is that the pin back, which is bradded in place, is a bit wobbly. If I were keeping it, I'd probably want someone with more knowledge than I have to tighten it perhaps. It closes securely, so maybe the little bit of movement allows his eye to move (that is purely a guess!!!)
Here's a piece that's important enough to be included in Judith Miller's "Costume Jewelry" 2007 (where she values it at $500-1,000, as well as Leigh Leshner's "Collecting Art Plastic Jewelry", valued at $850 (2005).
He's been living in his own heavy black velour box with plenty of room to stretch out. Not original, I'm sure, but definitely sturdy enough and worthy of this special guy.
Naturally he will be packed and shipped as carefully as possible and shipped insured as well.
This fellow deserves the best home possible...he's adorable and evidently a good rare find today. What an addition for a great collection!
